About New Port Richey, Fl

New Port Richey, FL is a city that flirted with greatness. In the roaring 1920s New Port Richey, had a brief romance with some of the top stars and studio executives of the decade. For a time, there was talk of making a studio in New Port Richey. Though the Great Depression cooled those plans, the dream never died. From a small city that was valued for its rural lands and retirement homes, New Port Richey, grew into a major urban area with hot real estate.New Port Richey is a pulsating residential community with a strong local government and an attractive historical downtown and Main Street. The city of New Port Richey  is alive with redevelopment and growth into a broad array of business and retail services. Since its incorporation in the year 1924, the city is most recognized for its cultural heritage and unique riverfront landscape. Located in Western Pasco County, New Port Richey is approximately thirty miles northwest of Greater Tampa and within a few miles to the Gulf of Mexico.

There have been a few developmental periods in New Port Richey, including the 1920s, the 1950s, the 1970s and most recently the 2000 decade. The appearance on a railroad and a major U.S. highway helped to turn the spotlight onto the city of New Port Richey. New Port Richey's downtown area has been livened up as of late, and now there are many commercial areas that cater to tourism.

What about New Port Richey, weather? Summers are mild and winter is cool. The major companies in the area are citrus products, retail, healthcare, government and education. There are 12 elementary schools, four middle schools, six high schools and two private schools as well as a community college in New Port Richey. There are several parks and recreation centers in the area as well as fishing opportunities on the lake.

The population of New Port Richey is believed to be over 16,000 people, though the last census estimated over 26,000 people. Why the 10,000 count difference? Because the total census counts New Port Richey, East as well as West. The city of New Port Richey has certainly had its own brush with stardom, as it was a favorite of legendary actors Gloria Swanson and Thomas Meighan. Former President George W. Bush spoke at Sims Park in the year 2004. The coastline was even used in the movie “The Norseman” starring Lee Majors.

AboutNew Port Richey, FL History

New Port Richey, FL history will reveal a great deal of human experience in this so-called “Playful City.” This city was named after a certain Captain Aaron Richey who traveled from Missouri and established the area in the 1880s. The New Port Richey area was officially founded in the year 1915 and incorporated nine years later. Before the official founding, the area was called Hickory Hammock.

New Port Richey Florida history continues with the beginning of the downtown area in 1911. The Port Richey Land Company is responsible for much of the city’s development and expansion. In the 1911 era, the area was seen as a sort of retirement paradise. It was a community for retirees and a center for outlying farmlands. This perception changed with the addition of a railroad and the nearby Dixie Highway. Real estate helped the city to develop further in the 1920s.

In the same decade, New Port Richey “went Hollywood”, as it began to attract major film stars like Thomas Meighan, Gloria Swanson and Ed Wynn. For a time, it was suggested that the city of New Port Richey would create its own motion picture studio, though the Great Depression changed things. The history of New Port Richey, FL doubled in the 1950s though the downtown area was suffering. New Port Richey would remain stagnant until the 1970s when redevelopment efforts would launch. Redevelopment of the city was again announced in 2000 and the community has been actively involved in developing their own projects ever since.

To see New Port Richey today is to see a variety of golf courses, shopping centers, local parks and a thriving downtown area. New Port Richey,’s flirtation with Hollywood left its mark and ever since then the citizens of New Port Richey have aspired to do great things. Come visit this Playful City and enjoy the history.

By 1914 the area around Orange Lake was being called "new Port Richey" and the older part of Port Richey was called "old Port Richey." In 1915 a separate post office was established for the residents of the southern part of Port Richey. The post office was named New Port Richey, and the name became official. The first postmaster was Gerben DeVries. The growth of the city of New Port Richey came about after George Sims purchased the Port Richey Land Company. He built a home in New Port Richey in 1916.

In 1924 New Port Richey was incorporated. The first mayor was one of New Port Richey's leading citizens, Dr. Elroy M. Avery, an author and educator who came to New Port Richey from Cleveland after he retired in 1919. The first act of the city council was to accept Enchantment Park as a gift from George Sims. The park was renamed Sims Park. The main attractions of the city were the park, the Pithlachascotee River, and Orange Lake.

In the mid-1920s New Port Richey hoped to become a winter home for Hollywood stars. In fact, Thomas Meighan, a leading actor in silent movies, built a large home on the river in 1928 and spent the winters there. He hoped to make movies in New Port Richey. Gene Sarazen, one of the top golfers in the 1920s, also built a home in New Port Richey. He invented the sand wedge in a garage in New Port Richey. Other Hollywood figures such as Ed Wynn and Gloria Swanson visited New Port Richey. Songwriter Irving Berlin and bandleader Paul Whiteman made down payments on property, but did not build homes. In 1926, a new theater named for Thomas Meighan opened, and in 1927, the Hacienda Hotel, a 55-room Spanish-style luxury hotel, was completed. Moon Lake Gardens and Dude Ranch, which featured a private game preserve of 7,000 acres, opened in the 1930s.

The end of the 1920s Florida land boom ended the aspirations of New Port Richey to become a haven for Hollywood celebrities, and the Great Depression had a devastating effect on New Port Richey.

Beginning in the late 1960s, western Pasco County began a decades-long period of rapid population growth, although the population of New Port Richey has not increased much because of the small area which makes up the city. Most of the population of western Pasco County is in unincorporated areas. Pasco-Hernando Community College began offering classes in New Port Richey in 1972, and completed construction of a campus in 1976. Gulf View Square Mall opened in 1980. In 2004 President George W. Bush, campaigning for re-election, spoke to supporters in Sims Park.
